Today we are so excited to introduce you to Rhythm of the Home sponsor nido, a unique fabric and yarn shop located in Burlington, Vermont. Owned and operated by Phiona Hamilton-Gordon, nido offers a beautiful selection of high quality yarns and fabrics, both in their downtown Burlington brick and mortar shop as well as through the nido online shop. Read on to find out a bit about how nido began and to enter to win a giveaway for some lovely fabric and a great sewing book.
Tell us a little bit about nido.
I opened nido’s brick and mortar shop in 2009 as a way to contribute to the growing do-it-yourself movement in my community. I wanted to offer contemporary fibers that at that time, were not available anywhere locally. As nido grew into itself, we started carrying fibers that were not readily available in the US, and our online shop was created in 2010 to accommodate people from out of state who were interested in our fabrics and yarn.
How do you balance being an artist, business owner and parent?
My vision for opening nido always included making my first priority my family. One of the many benefits of being a small business owner is that you can create a work environment that meets your needs. Being the Virgo that I am, I made a plan and I stuck to it! Originally nido was only open 5 days a week from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and there was a strict no working from home policy that I had to enforce on myself. When I am at work, I work hard and put on the many hats of a small business owner, but when I am at home, I just enjoy my family, watch my son grow and appreciate life as much as I can. Thankfully I have a very supportive husband who keeps me balanced and well fed!
What are a few of your favorite items in the shop right now?
Lotta Jansdotter’s book “Simple Sewing” is by far one of my ultimate favorite sewing books. It has simple projects that even a novice sewest can be successful with but has at the same time, has many useful projects in it that people of all levels of expertise can appreciate. Also, we are all swooning over the new Nani Iro fabric we just got in. It is truly unique. My favorite is the Waltz print, shown here in the Periwinkle colorway. I really want to sew a beach bag with it. I also have been coveting Lucie Summer’s Summersville collection. I want to make dish towels out of the Metro Flowers print.
Thanks to all of you who entered the giveaway! We have chosen a winner and Mooberry Farmwife (a.k.a. Julia), we will be in touch.
Today, Phiona from nido fabric + yarn, is offering one lucky winner a copy of “Simple Sewing” by Lotta Jansdotter and 1 yard of Nani Iro Waltz fabric in the periwinkle colorway. To enter this wonderful giveaway, simply leave a comment on this post. We will choose a winner next Friday, June 29th, 2012 via random number generator.
Thank you, nido!
