Tell us a bit about Mosey
Mosey Handmade is a Waldorf inspired shop. We focus on creating items that nurture children’s imaginations. We strive to make heirloom quality items from natural materials like wool and wood, with an understanding that those materials have a soothing and nurturing effect on a young child’s development. One of our most popular items are our wool felt birthday crowns that have whimsical designs and beautiful woven ribbon. In fact we sometimes have mamas and papas order them for themselves!
What inspired you to begin your work, and what keeps you motivated today?
I started Mosey from my experiences teaching in Waldorf kindergartens. Seeing how soothing and almost therapeutic toys made out of natural materials could be was a big inspiration. Our creations come from a belief in imaginative play. Once I started making these types of toys and decorations for the classroom, I just couldn’t stop. I loved working with the natural materials and colors so much. I had always been an artist and went to art school, but this crafting for kids and families for their special days is very rewarding in a different way. Like a community building for the digital age. I was making so many toys they were threatening to overtake the kindergarten and my own house, so I opened up an Etsy shop in 2006. After 5 years working on my own, I reconnected with one of my best friends, Stephanie Martz, who I’ve known since high school. She is a brilliant artist and a college art professor, and her energy and ideas have really helped Mosey to grow. Plus, it’s so nice having a partner and working with a good friend.
The children I’ve taught, my own daughter and Stephanie’s nieces are wonderful testers as well as being the audience for our work. They keep us honest and help us make sure our creations are sturdy. Seeing photos from customers with their children wearing our crowns and feeling beautiful and proud, that helps keep us going.
An extra special thing that we have been making this past year are our completely customized birthday crowns and honestly, the parents themselves are so inspiring. They are filled with so much love for their children, and their own imaginations shape the things we make down to the finest details. Working on those has been such a joy.
How do you balance being an artist, business owner and parent?
Balancing two businesses (Mosey and Morning Glory Garden Playschool) sometimes tests our whole family: my three year old daughter, my husband and myself. If it wasn’t for my amazing husband and my tireless partner in craft – I would never get through a single week with my sanity intact! My husband does his best to move around the craft mess in this house and I thank him. And, being able to talk with my partner Steph at any time of the day always helps. We can bounce ideas off each other and also work through any problems that we have – having a true business partner has been such a gift to Mosey.
I also enjoy a long steeped cup of black tea & honey on a daily basis- that and my toddler’s dance moves keep me going!
One special object I always keep in a special place is a tin soap advertisement with a picture of a little pigtailed girl on it. We found it in our little cabin when we first moved to the woods of Maine. It reads “Have you a fairy in your house?” That question always makes me reflect on the type of childhood magic I want to keep alive in my family’s life and in our creative work.
