Tell us a bit about Butterbean.
The mission of Butterbean is simple. It is about using healthy ingredients that protect the skin, while complementing the relationship of people to their environment. Our sunscreen, lip balm and bug spray are handmade in small batches by artisans who believe the best ingredients are natural. Butterbean products will gently nourish, protect, and heal the skin of everyone in the family.
Butterbean is a mama-owned business that makes sunscreen, bug spray, and lip balm. I started making these products for my own family and friends, and I got such positive feedback that I thought other people may want to try these natural, effective alternatives as well. I think the atmosphere for local, organic, and artisanal products is ripe right now as people realize that the best way to get a quality product is to know the first name of the person who makes it! The thing that I get most excited about when it comes to Butterbean is the list of ingredients. I use certified organic raw coconut oil and organic fair trade Shea Butter. The beeswax is from a local apiary. My apricot kernel oil is free of chemicals, and my vitamin E is from a company that makes a pledge against GMO’s. The essential oils I use in the bug spray and lip balm are 100% pure and steam distilled. I have also been pleased with finding an organic source for Neem oil as this is one of the key ingredients in Bug-a-boo. This year, Butterbean sunscreen is listed as an EWG top pick with a score of “1.”
How do you balance being a business owner and parent?
Late nights! Fortunately I am a night person, so, after the children are tucked into bed, and the house is quiet, I get to work! I have a passion for family life and healthy living so I am so grateful to have this space where I can express my bliss. I have found that having a small business allows me to maintain my own identity while still being present and available to my family. It also connects me to the community in an intimate way. I get so excited when I walk into a shop that carries my sunscreen, or when I get an email about someone’s experience with my products.
What is one special object in your home that makes you smile, pause, or reflect?
My oldest daughter and I share a birthday, and one year, as a gift, she made me a beautiful banner out of scraps of fabric. She cut each piece into the shape of a triangle and hot glued the pieces onto a piece of twine. She did all of this without my knowing (and I have eyes in the back of my head)! I was overwhelmed with the magnamity of a project like this for a child, and the thoughtful and generous spirit that made it. This little prayer flag hangs in my family room above a window. I see it everyday and it reminds me of my gratefulness for the sweetness of home and family!
Today Butterbean is generously offering one Rhythm of the Home reader a Butterbean gift pack. The gift pack includes 1 3oz jar of sunscreen, 1 bug-a-boo, and 1 lip balm. To enter to win, please leave a comment on this post. We will pick a winner next Thursday, June 27th.
