Make Stuff Together and a Giveaway

June 20, 2011

We are excited to share with you today a fabulous new book written by Rhythm of the Home contributor Bernadette Noll, along with co-author Kathie Sever. Make Stuff Together: 24 Simple Projects to Create as a Family features not only wonderful and unique family craft projects, but also serves as a handbook for parents wishing to connect with their children through creating.

Make Stuff Together shares a wealth of stories and tips about how to acquire materials and work with children while building meaningful experiences. The book focuses on the use of upcycled, recycled, and repurposed materials, most of which are accessible and inexpensive. Kathie and Bernadette provide lots of suggestions for getting out into your community and connecting with others while seeking out materials. Gathering burlap sacks from your local coffee roaster or end rolls from the upholsterer’s shop keeps useful materials out of the landfill and provides unique and free materials for your family to work with – all the while building connections with those around you. The variety of materials used adds so much color and diversity to the finished projects in this book. No doubt you will find plenty of inspiration in these pages – not just in the projects themselves but also in the thoughtful words of the authors.

The projects are divided into six units: dinner time, library time, into the woods, fun and games, happy birthday to you!, and commemorate and celebrate. The projects in each unit are parceled into easy-to-manage segments that help you share quality time with your family without finding yourself overwhelmed.

We are excited to share with you today a free project; you may download the pdf instructions for this wonderful Appreciation Banner from Make Stuff Together. We’d love to hear how you incorporate this project into your family’s daily rhythms.

To find out more about Bernadette and Kathie’s work, visit their website and blog at Future Craft Collective and on Facebook.

To celebrate Make Stuff Together, we are giving away one free copy to a ROTH reader. For a chance to win, simply comment below.  We will announce the winner later this week.

This book was made for me, and the kids that I work with as an occupational therapist and as a mom. Have follow “future craft collective” and “craft hope”, so inspired that we made hope flags at local schools and to send to an orphanage in Haiti, as well as sock monkeys for operation sock monkey. Started “www.thepurpletree.ca” and collective to get back to basics, build community, empower through the handmade and giving to others. Always looking for cool ideas. Congrats to the authors and us supporters for continuing to create alternatives to screen time. Go sew go!

I have been looking for something to share with my daughter that is an indoor project. The heat we get in Southern California makes playing outside difficult. I would love to add this book to my collection.

This would be a wonderful resource for inspiring some more creativity around my home, I loved to have us all work together on some projects and I love the of repurposing materials for those creations.

I absolutely lovvvvvvvvvvvvvve ROTH. I just discovered it today, and I wish that it had existed when my own children were younger (sigh) but alas, I am a teacher of young, special needs students, and these sensory type activities adapt oh-so-nicely. I followed a thread from Susan K’s Making Books and I am very pleased to have found this site and another, This Little Light of Mine Blog.
