Being: Conscious, mortal existence; life.
Every month we welcome two families, two people, two voices to share their stories in whatever way they chose. We hope that you find joy in their daily lives, and their simple habit of just being.
Right before school ended Isabel brought home this piece of paper with so much truth on it.
It was the here and now of being in Kindergarten, what she loved to do, eat, who she lived with. It was to help us remember who she was as she embarked into summer and on to first grade. And it was super cute.
But then, my heart caught in my throat as I read the last answer blank: ”My favorite place is home.”
Something in my heart sings when my child writes that answer for a favorite. She had infinite possibilities. The zoo, a special friends house, the community garden, the swimming pool. But she chose home. It brought a tear to my eye and a catch in my throat.
This piece of paper holds something for me. A soft spot, a sense that we as a family have gotten something correct. If nothing else, we have made our house a soft place to fall. A place that we know we’ll be loved, accepted and educated. And a breath of fresh air upon arrival. The energy of our love for each other cannot be denied. And if I had to fill in this blank, my favorite place would be home too.
Where is your favorite place? Is your house a soft place to fall? How do you cultivate that?
We hope you will join us in welcoming Mary to the blog during this month of June! Mary will be here each Wednesday to share her photographs and reflections with us. You can read more about Mary’s life as an art director and parent on her own blog The Yellow Door Paperie.

What better compliment could you receive from your child than that. So touching!
Oh my, frameworthy!
So Sweet. Please be very proud of yourself and your family for making your home a welcome favorite place! My son recently told me that his “cozy bed is one of his favorite places.” It felt good to hear that his place of rest is a place he feels best.
