We are so thrilled to be sharing a giveaway from one of our Spring sponsors today! Sparkle Stories is the brain child of the husband and wife duo Lisabeth and David Sewell McCann. An audio story treasure chest specifically for children ages 3 to 10. Not only are the stories that they have adorable and charming, but they also offer support for young kids and parents to help them navigate through difficult and common issues in childhood such as such as teasing, loss and grief, social inclusion and self confidence.
Please enjoy getting to know the husband and wife behind Sparkle Stories.
Tell us a bit about Sparkle Stories.
Sparkle Stories is a new site with audio stories for children ages 3 to 10. We offer 4 delightful story series: stories about fairy magic in So Many Fairies, animal adventures in Junkyard Tales, as well as tales of the day to day explorations of the much-adored Martin & Sylvia. And then there’s Saturday Sparkle — which contains part original work, and part classic tales songs and verses from all over the world. Each week families can download new episodes from their favorite story series, over 5 hours of delightful audio a month, for just over the price of a single CD.
What inspired you to begin your work?
The idea for Sparkle came in a flash one day: I was reading the blog Soulemama — and Amanda Soule was asking for story suggestions to share with her kids. It was one of those times for her — like we all have — when we’re nearly desperate for something to entertain our kids for a bit so that we can have space. When you’re cautions about media — like a lot of families are now — it can be tricky! And so I was reading the suggestions that were coming in — and I had this flash. WE HAVE WHAT THEY ARE LOOKING FOR.
When I say we, I mostly mean David. David can spin a story like no one I’ve ever met. You give him a few words– like “a broken chair, a wistful princess, and a wish” — and he can weave the most amazing tale. He’s a Waldorf teacher by training, and a performer at heart, and I’ve watched many a room-full of children and adults sit motionless while he shares that magic gift of his.
And I’m a playwright by training, and a natural editor. I love to write and collaborate and produce.
So my thought was this: if I could just capture what he does, and we could collaborate, and offer it up to the world, what a business that would be! The idea wouldn’t let me go. And so that’s how Sparkle was started.
What keeps you motivated today?
The subscribers! We get emails about how kids are loving the stories, how the whole family sits down to listen, how a particular story has been healing, or inspiring — or even just that the stories have completely enthralled the children while mom (or dad) made dinner! And listeners feel great about the content. And that’s just thrilling.
How do you balance being an artist, business owner and parent?
This has got to be the biggest challenge for all small business owners who are also parents and artists. There’s always a call: more balance! We talk about it a lot. We define work time and family time. Work time always spills, but at this point in our lives, it mostly spills into what would (should) be our sleep time! We’re a new business too, and with all of the growing, and all the potential, we could work all the time. But then I remind myself that everything in nature has its gestational and growth cycles, and I cultivate trust that Sparkle has it’s own unique creative growth process. And that exhausted business owners and artists aren’t very productive or creative. And they make for grouchy parents!
What are your hopes for Sparkle Stories for the future?
We want to be a platform for alternative media for families. Imagine a place where parents can go to find audio material that they love and trust, that is not only entertaining but also inspiring and nurturing! We would love to eventually involve other artists and be a grand collaborative project!
